When I was a wee tot or just a average, insecure teenager there wasn't much in regards to high fashion clothing or stylish gear that was easily accessible and/or cheap. I remember even the "cool kids" were pretty basic looking (except that one broad in high school that wore 4 inch patent leather heels from Wet Seal everyday, strutting her shit down B-Hall like it was a catwalk in Milan. Hmm...)
Well let's fast forward 5-10yrs to now...what in the name of Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel is going on? Target began introducing decently priced items by high fashion designers to the average-Joe(or Josephine) about 2 years ago and the concept has taken off. I admit that I am a quite impressed and also a bit bitter that such a thing wasn't around when I was in high school. I see 15yr. old girls now and they are so well dressed and coordinated. They exude the confidence of a 25yr. old woman...it's almost a bit frightening because what happens to those girls who never got a chance to be awkward, un-stylish? Are they growing up too fast? Who knows? I guess we will see in another 10yrs. I am also impressed with the advancement in fashion in regards to sizes. When I was in high school I was an overweight pudger. My style guide was whatever Old Navy had available because not all "cool" stores(which consisted of Delias at the time. YIKES!) carried larger sizes. I eventually grew into my curves and lost that dreadful teenage angst fat (although my thighs never cease! grrr). Times have changed however, it is basic knowledge that girls aren't labeled by a "small", "medium" or "large". There are curvy women, petite women, apple shaped, pear shaped and the list goes on and on. We aren't all built alike and it's much appreciated to see an array of sizes and fittings for everyone to look good. I don't worry if a store carries my size anymore (unless it's 5.7.9. but that store is for cheap hookers as is G, Rave, Deb etc.) It's good to see women of all shapes, sizes and races can feel good about themselves with such accessibility to the latest styles and great designers without having to break the bank. Hmmm now bringing me to the point of this whole blog... in March 2009, Target will be featuring Alexander McQueen (yes, THE Alexander McQueen) as one of their limited-time designers. Can't wait!
